I am currently a Professor in the Department of Mathematics in the
Faculty of Science. I graduated with a BSc degree from The Hong Kong
University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 2003. In 2008, I
received my Ph.D in Applied Mathematics from University of California
at Los Angeles (UCLA) under the supervision of Prof. Tony Fan-Cheong
CHAN. Before joining CUHK in 2010, I worked as a Postdoctoral Scholar
for 2 years in the Department of Mathematics at Harvard University,
hosted by Prof. Shing-Tung Yau. I am now serving as the Executive
Director of the Center for Mathematical Artificial Intelligence (CMAI).
Besides, I am also leading Geometric Imager, a research group focusing
on imaging with geometry.
The main focus of my research has been on computational quasi-conformal geometry and their applications to medical imaging, computer vision and computer graphics. The main goal is to develop mathematical theories, models and algorithms to effectively study geometric structures, using quasi-conformal Teichmuller theory as a tool. Over the years, I have been developing computational algorithms for quasiconformal geometry, understanding their theoretical aspects and applying them to real-world applications. These works have led to an emerging interdisciplinary field: Computational Quasi-conformal Geometry (CQC), which has found important applications in various fields, including medical imaging, computer visions and 3D geometry processing. Because of my research contributions, I have been honoured to receive numerous awards in mathematics. In particular, I have been awarded the Morningside Mathematics (Silver) Medal in 2016, which is given to exceptional mathematicians of Chinese descent under the age of forty-five for their seminal achievements in mathematics in the International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM) once every 3 years. And in 2018, I have been awarded the Hong Kong Mathematical Society (HKMS) Young Scholar Award, which is a major honour for young mathematicians in HK.
Besides research, another contribution in my career is on teaching. I always have a strong interest in teaching mathematics. Mathematics is a fascinating subject with plenty of applications in various fields. As a mathematics teacher, enlightening students to the beauty and power of mathematics has always been my goal of teaching. After joining CUHK, I have had chances to teach fundamental mathematics courses as well as advanced applied mathematics courses to undergraduate and master students. My teaching has been highly rated by my peers and students. Besides, I have been supervising 18 postgraduate students. My teaching has been recognized with the Faculty Exemplary Teaching Award 2015 and Vice-Chacellor's Exemplary Teaching Award 2019.
I am a Christian, who has been saved by God. My life is devoted to follow Jesus Christ, who is my living saviour and died for men on the cross to give all believers the eternal life. I belive Bible is God's words, which is "a lamp to my feet and a light to my path".
I am also the hubby of my beautiful wife and the daddy of my lovely
daughter.
